HMIs in mechanical engineering

Over the past few years, we have found many standard solutions for HMIs and input systems in addition to various customer-specific products. These include a completely new product such as BKTWE. HMIs can make the operation of machines and systems more intuitive, faster and safer for the user. The implementation of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which has been binding for EU countries since 29 December 2009, has also standardised the requirements for the export of machines and HMIs for mechanical engineering.

The most important performance characteristics of an HMI in mechanical engineering

The most important performance characteristics of an HMI or touch panel in mechanical engineering are briefly summarised here:

  • Closed surface (at least IP65)
  • Resistant to cleaning agents and oil
  • Optimized readability
  • Traceability of the functional components
  • Protection against liquids
  • Electromagnetic compatibility — EMC
  • Usability with gloves
  • Designed for use in harsh environments
  • Mechanical resistance of the surfaces
